What to check first

Start with the details that affect your operation

The loads you haul, where you run and who you work for can change what insurance and filings you need.

01 · KNOW YOUR AUTHORITY

Confirm your operating setup.

FMCSA registration, operating authority, insurance filings and state requirements depend on the business and operations. Confirm what applies before hauling.

02 · MATCH THE COVERAGE

Tell us what you haul.

Cargo type, radius, equipment, drivers and contracts can affect available trucking insurance and underwriting.

03 · KEEP YOUR RECORDS

Stay ready for inspections.

Make a plan for vehicle inspection, maintenance and safety documents. Federal new entrant requirements may apply to new interstate carriers.

Straight answers

Questions we hear often

Does trucking liability insurance cover my own truck?

Auto liability generally addresses certain covered injuries or damage to others. Physical damage for your own truck is separate coverage when purchased.

Is cargo insurance the same as truck insurance?

No. Motor truck cargo insurance addresses certain covered losses involving freight, subject to its terms and exclusions. It is separate from coverage for the truck itself.

What is the FMCSA New Entrant Safety Assurance Program?

Generally, new interstate motor carriers are subject to an 18-month new entrant monitoring period and typically undergo a safety audit during the first 12 months. Specific rules and timelines should be confirmed with FMCSA.

Do I need proof of insurance before operating?

Federal and state insurance and filing requirements depend on your authority and operations. Confirm required filings and effective coverage before hauling.
